I built the initial BrainTool to scratch a personal itch - to unify my bookmarks and online resources with text-based notes. I've spent the last several months iterating on it with feedback from early adopters and UX volunteers. It's finally at the point where I feel confident enough to seek this communities feedback.

BrainTool is a browser extension that makes it easy to save pages of interest into a personal 'topic' hierarchy, along with associated notes. Your topics are shown in an editable side panel which can also control the browser - opening and closing tabs, tab groups and windows by topic. The above by itself makes BrainTool one of the handiest bookmarks/tabs/browser managers around, but the kicker is that all your data is stored in a separately editable org-mode[1] format plaintext file. Off-browser I edit my braintool file in emacs but I've also played around syncing with LogSeq, Orgzly and other org-based tools. If you're an emacs user it could give you a shallow on-ramp into the world of org-mode, if you're an aspiring PKMer it's an easy way to slurp in all of your online resources, if you just want to get out of tab hell and up your browser game - dive right in!

Its serverless so your data never leaves your personal environment. Chromium-based browsers only for now (Chrome, Edge, Brave, etc. not FF).

,Could “View Source” Ever Vanish from the Browser?I've been working on a session to teach kids a little bit of "hacking," and it involves introducing them to the "inspect element" feature of the browser and letting them edit the contents of a web page. The thought is that, by letting them play with the HTML and code of their favorite websites, they can learn a little bit about how it all comes together. But a haunting thought came to me: what if websites started closing off their code and making it proprietary, shutting people out from that layer of understanding. Could this ever happen, or am I being paranoid?.
,Ask HN: Why can't Chrome understand difference in closing windows and crashes?I'm really angry. I've asked for this from Chrome developers multiple times: when my chrome windows - all of them - crash in private mode, I want to be able to reopen them, because I didn't close them.

I've just lost over 10 hours of reading that I had opened to work through. (Part of many reasons that I use private mode is that I don't like autocomplete and when I'm done reading about a subject I can simply remember it, I never need it to pop up when I start typing in the URL bar, etc etc. If I need something permanently, I save it.)

So since Chrome developers don't seem to be able to understand the difference, maybe I'm missing something. Does anyone know why they cannot differentiate a Crash from me closing private windows? The promise when you open such a tab is "Pages you view in incognito tabs won’t stick around in your browser’s history, cookie store, or search history after you’ve closed all of your incognito tabs" and not "... after you’ve closed all of your incognito tabs OR THE BROWSER CRASHES."

This is extremely frustrating. This was very important reading for me that I spent many hours collecting so that I could focus on it. I have tried add-ons and they don't work. I just want Chrome to meet its promise and have these tabs and windows open untiL I (not a crash) has closed all of them. They could at least make it an option.

I hope someone can clear up my thinking. I've just lost a devastating amount of my time. Now all I have is a paper checklist of the subjects, for me to again repeat my background research into. This doesn't seem a fair burden on the user, to have to use a pen and paper to do Chrome's developers' job for them: i.e. to let me read what I've opened and not close it and make it disappear without any way to get it back, and not at my request.

Do I really need to use pen and paper here? At least let me set this behavior as an option..
,Launch HN: GoLinks (YC W19) – Internal short links for teamsHello HN!

We’re Jorge, Kevin and Sean and we’re building GoLinks (https://www.golinks.io).

GoLinks is a platform that allows you to easily manage and share links by letting teams create a short link for any internal URL within a company. These links are easy to remember and share, so you don't have to bookmark or copy and paste them in emails.

Each day we use and share hundreds of links to get our jobs done, without considering how long it takes to access and share these resources. It’s one reason why many of us leave tabs open in our browser: we don’t want to spend the 5 to 10 steps to navigate back to that important page. With GoLinks, you’ll be able to deep-link directly into any application with just a simple keyword entered into your address bar. This allows links to be conversational. For example, one employee can create the keyword “go/review” to point to the annual review page in Workday. Later in a meeting, that employee can mention, “Remember to visit go/review to fill out your annual reviews!” Now anyone in that meeting can remember and access the link “go/review”, without digging through their email or Slack.

Golink systems are commonly used in many big tech companies such as Google, Linkedin, Twitter and Airbnb, built by internal tools engineers in those companies. These systems have become an integral part of the way tech companies share internal links.

When we started our careers in tech, we would often visit each other for lunch at these tech companies and we began to notice the same go/links everywhere. In the hallways, cafes, break rooms, posters. fliers and TVs, there would be these keywords prefixed with “go/” that allowed employees to quickly access information on their devices. The employee could enter a shortened URL like go/food into their mobile browser, or desktop, and could access the lunch menu for that day. An easy and simple concept, but an extremely powerful method for internal communication.

Although these systems are ubiquitous in large tech companies, we noticed there was nothing on the market that catered to startups, midsize, or non-tech companies. Companies usually don’t have the time or the resources to build sophisticated internal tools, so we set out to create GoLinks as a Service.

The challenge was building an internal tool for companies that may not have any internal infrastructure. For example, large tech companies have infrastructure so when you connect to the company Wifi or access the VPN, you can access the internal company network. This allows users to access the “go” domain on the network, which resolves the deep link redirection. For smaller and midsize companies, employees might be 100% remote or working in a coworking space, or maybe the company never got around to setting up an intranet. We had to build a product that did not rely on assuming internal infrastructure.

We were able to replicate the functionality of an internal network, and the simplicity of a short-link redirect system, by creating browser extensions for each of the popular browsers. The extension would proxy the “go” domain to our server and we authenticate and redirect the user to the correct location. Now coworkers can be on any network and any wifi, and as long as they authenticate in their current browser, we can find their company’s internal links.

We are startup-friendly—anyone under 10 users can get started completely free—but our main initial focus is on enterprise clients.

,Ask HN: How to deal with GDPR / cookie notices in the context of a crawler?To comply with the new European legislation many websites put a GDPR / cookie consent notice in front of their websites. There are different implementations of this. While some are only implemented as modal covering the website or bar on the bottom of the screens (in both cases right next to the original content), other implementations redirect the user to a totally different (sub-)domain or even hijack the request and show the consent form instead of the requested content (on the same URL with a 200 status code).

The latter ones present a issue to my crawler. I cannot access the content of the page without accepting those notices.

Things I'm considering to bypass those notices:

* US IP address (easy to implement, but some websites also display those notices to US IP's)

* Heuristics to detect those notices and accept them programatically (takes some time to implement - while a couple of vendors (i.e. OneTrust) offer off-the-shelf solutions which are easy to identify and automate, there are also many custom made solutions, so the system would need understand the concept of a consent form and how to bypass it - some forms only require the press of the right button, others involve checkboxes/radio buttons). To collect test data one solution might be to visit a set of websites once with an US IP, once with an EU IP and/or with different user agents (browser or googlebot).

Do you have any ideas how to approach this problem? Or are you even utilizing some techniques already and are willing to share them?.

Long version:

For the past two years, I've been working on Clutterme Inc., a Toronto-based startup with some moderate success. I've occasionally posted about it here. For a variety of reasons, my co-founder and I are closing up shop and heading our separate ways, and I would love to move to the Bay Area.

I am, unapologetically, a jack-of-all-trades. I pick up new languages or tools quickly, and I love learning new things, but if an old tool happens to be better, I'm happy to use it: best tool for the job. This does means that I am not, and will never be, a guru in any specific topic, but it also means that I will not bat an eyelash at a sudden change of direction or at investigating or learning a new technology. I pride myself on being pragmatic, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done and end up with a good product.

Some of the things I've made (short descriptions available at http://www.alexc.me):

- clutterme.com - WYSIWYG AJAX in-browser web page creation, made from scratch using Ruby on Rails, Prototype, and a lot of custom Javascript.

- Facebook applications - they currently have around 1 million installs, and were receiving 6 million page views at their peak. Written with PHP, FBML/FQL/FBJS, and MySQL (no frameworks).

- Some personal hobby projects with CakePHP and MySQL. Never as successful as the Facebook apps, but around 300,000 page views/month at their peak.

- Used a number of APIs - register.com, Paypal Website Payments Pro, Facebook, LyricFind. Right now playing with the Google Analytics API and Wordpress.

- iPhone applications - LyricFind and LyricFind Lite, currently at #4 (Canada) and #9 (US) in the free Music category of the app store. A couple more apps in various stages of completion or in app store approval limbo.

I've had a lot of fun working on a start-up, and I am definitely looking for a small, motivated team, that wants (and needs) to make things happen quickly.

I greatly respect the HN community, and I feel that a company whose people read HN is more likely to be a place I would enjoy working at - perhaps as an employer, you feel the same about me ;)

,Ask HN: Lyrics website startup?Over on reddit this weekend there were a few threads about how awful lyrics websites are, and talked about a bunch of their problems.

Naturally, being in this community for so long I see something like this as an opportunity. I started a thread over asking what people would like to see in a new Lyrics site (on reddit). That received minimal attention but I got a bit of feedback:

-No annoying adds (playing sound, irrelevant, covering the text)

-Easy searching that works

-Simple design

-Categorization

-Stop messing with my browser behaviour (selecting, right-clicks)

Now, I have some half-way decent ideas about how to set up the thing, such as letting it be a community run site similar to how sites such as stack-overflow are moderated. I also have some long-goals, such as attempting to get lyrics data direct from labels and link directly to their preferred supplier for that music (however, I don't think this is revolutionary).

The biggest thing in my mind would be a lyrics site that doesn't take hours to load, get out the bloat of junk, and let it be a community run thing with tagging and moderation.

I'm the sort of person who thinks things too far into the future and too broadly on the horizon, so my main concern with this is that I've made my target so large I don't have a project that I can complete in short order with minimal complications.

My key theory is that people will use my site because it will be an open community, and not bloated with junk. I'm planning on something like google ads onto the page as the primary form of monetization.

Have I gone too far, or missed something critical that I should stop and look at, or should I put fist to the keyboard and bang this thing out over the next few weekends?.
,Ask HN: Bounty – iOS doesn't hold my scroll position when going back to HNThis is a problem that's been frustrating me here on HN when using iOS Safari on iPhone 12 Pro Max:

When visiting any link on HN, whether it goes to another HN page or external website, then using the Back button or back swipe to return, my scroll position is not held. The page appears to reload and I'm left at the top of the page. The only way to hold my scroll position is to open the link in a new tab with a long press.

This doesn't happen on any other mobile site for me. Also doesn't happen when using Chrome on MacOS in mobile emulation mode.

Have tried closing all tabs, logging out of HN, quitting browser, deleting HN Safari cache, rebooting phone, all to no avail.

I had 1 open chrome window set to the new tab page, but network activity was blinking pretty steady. Paranoia leads to inspection and I found this strange connection posting back and forth from facebook. It appears it opened while I was reading a story on money.cnn.com but it never closed. Note that the capture start time is after i closed all browser windows and cleared all browsing data in chrome (habit of mine to do that before i close chrome completely).

I wasnt aware this was possible, to keep the connection going completely outside the context of any webpage, and beyond that theres some strange data thats a bit new to me. Specifically the X-Cnction: field that they put in, and some of the options placed in the Cache: field (must-revalidate?).

This is mostly a curiousity as im trying to decipher purpose, and also generally if my concept of JavaScript security is way off (I was under the impression closing a website where the JavaScript was loaded would terminate it?). My best guess so far is that theyre trying to compile data on what people read, whatever they can wring the browser into telling them via JS, but i may be way off so if youre familiar with HTTP traffic and ajax/xmlhttp id appreciate your thoughts. ,Ask HN: Why are browsers so bad at stopping popups and other dark patterns?Popups have long been an issue along with other types of ads, but the most infuriating kind I've ever seen are those which watch the mouse position and throw up an ad or subscription plea when I'm moving the mouse upwards to the tab bar after I've finished reading an article and want to close the tab.

Obviously blocking scripts' access to positional data would break many sorts of useful interactions, but there are far more pages that snag that data to display ads on mouseover or page border interactions which brings zero benefit to me as a user. Why is there no way to either pool that information among browser users to negate this dark pattern, or to remember my dismissive interactions of closing popups and pre-emptively negate them next time I visit a page?

Also, if you work as a designer or front-end developer who implements this sort of thing, I want you to feel bad about it and talk your money hungry marketing people out of it; because when your employers' revenue eventually sinks due to pissing off more and more of your readers, you'll get laid off looong before the marketing people do and if you don't stop and think you won't even understand why..
