[Music], hey it's me now a lot of people in the, art community were taking coloring books, and coloring them as the proficient, artist that they are professional, artists coloring in a coloring book and, it's like woo i didn't jump on this, trend because i'm very uncomfortable, with calling myself a professional, artist when my art looks like this and, that and that which is fine i'm not, trying to put myself down art doesn't, have to be outstanding to be fun i know, for a lot of people who have like the, really amazing art skills they can turn, a coloring book page into a masterpiece, i feel like if i colored a coloring book, page it would just look like i colored a, coloring book page you know so i'm kind, of doing my own thing here of course of, course i just can never do the thing the, way you're supposed to do it i did used, to really love coloring books in fact i, have brought some of my old coloring, books in here for evidence i don't know, why i need evidence not like it's an, outrageous claim what it can't be not, that shocking uh we've got little's pet, shop we've got lisa frank disney and, strawberry shortcake i colored in i, think all of these, nope didn't color in that one there's, one colored didn't color in that okay, maybe i didn't love coloring books, colored that while the uh coloring book, challenge would be a great opportunity, to put these old coloring books to use, that have been on my shelf for 10 years, i'm gonna just step away from them i'm, still not going to use that so what i'm, going to do instead is i'm going to draw, my own coloring page and then i'm gonna, print it out and then i'm gonna color it, so this video really isn't all that, related to the trend when i thought of, this idea though for some reason i just, got really excited about it because it's, combining digital art and traditional, art and i get to have full control over, what my coloring page looks like and, also don't have the pressure of really, transforming something into a beautiful, piece of art because it's like okay it's, my original art so we we're just not, gonna take that lens on it let's move, into phase one where i actually start, creating my coloring page, i said let's move let's move go okay and, here's my little area my creative area, ew scratch that wait no don't scratch, anything okay uh hi i'm gonna start my, design and whoa there's a lot happening, already it's a little too intense it's, too much too soon let's take a step back, just pay no attention to the sketch, that's already on the canvas i uh got a, little over eager but don't worry about, it remember these they are the sky bears, i painted these chip clips in a recent, dollar store makeover video and i'm sure, you can't have forgotten them already, unless you skipped that week, i'm not gonna name any names you know, who you are but today i'll be taking, these characters to the next stage, beyond mere existence into, enlightenment, i don't know what i'm talking about i, think i've done too many voiceovers in, my time on this planet earth earth is, the one i'm on i think now there's, cloudy bear he's got his head in the, clouds he's actually just really tired, then there's rainbow bear she's sweet, and sunbear who's a literal ball of, energy and it's kind of a lot as a group, they make the sky bears now for today's, project i thought a lot about what i, wanted to do for my fantabulous coloring, book experience you see me trying to, hype this thing up i decided on bringing, the sky bears back because one i didn't, feel like i got to explore these, characters to the fullest i mean their, heads which is great it's very important, part of the body but i feel like the sky, bears you know they just hadn't reached, their fullest potential also you may, notice that a fourth bear has been born, right there in front of you ew, introducing rain bear he's sad he's so, sad he cries the tears of the entire, world poor rain bear it kind of sounds, like i'm saying rainbow with an, australian accent what reindeer no, currently struggling with his legs i, don't know why i'm failing to comprehend, what legs look like this is one of the, problems that comes from drawing from, your imagination your imagination is, whack and i'm using a big rainbow to, frame all the characters in then i spent, a lot of time fussing over stuff, changing things until i'm ready to do, the final outline i was quite happy to, be doing this outline digitally i, actually hate outlining with traditional, art supplies getting the fine line or, the micron pens, but doing it this way is so much better, because when you're using digital art, you can so much easier remove things, move things redo things as much as you, want but with that amount of flexibility, i had feelings i just feel like this, outline needs to be perfect it's never, permanently done it can always be fixed, can always just move something or change, something there's no excuse for a single, mistake here it has to be fantastic then, i realized you know it's probably best, that i don't get too carried away with, the details of the outline because i, really want to give myself plenty of, freedom in the coloring i don't want to, box myself in so i decided you know what, no i'm just going to keep the line art, really simple yes it's going to look, dumb but that way i can add the details, in when i actually go to color and, that's how i'll bring it to life and, here's the point where i obsess over, each individual pixel go ahead and erase, that pixel girl, i decided to give the rain bear's paw a, nice little appearance so that you know, he's holding onto that cloud doesn't, seem very safe or stable maybe not a, good idea but that's how he's doing and, some other things you know fixing up, doing it whatever once i got everything, the way i wanted i did a test print on, just regular old computer paper, surprisingly it looks pretty good well, you may think it looks like trash that's, rude i did notice some little micro, details that i wanted to fix up before, moving to the final print but after i've, gotten my full fix of obsession it's, time, i already know what sound effect i'm, and this was the one that i liked, i'm not normally much of a paper snob i, mean i use computer paper on the reg but, i kind of wanted to do something nice, today and now is the epic moment, i'm really trying to inject drama into, this i'm overcompensating for the fact, that this isn't that exciting this is, where i switch out the ipad for the, paper switching between worlds traveling, dimensions i'm an art dimension traveler, no no i'm gonna get rid of these because, things may get a little messy here and, boom, it's a brand new set of watercolor, pencils i've always been intrigued by, watercolor pencils but after my last, horrible experience with trying to use, some of those nasty discount watercolor, pencils um it just about made me lose it, okay but i've upgraded to these new, pencils that are supposed to be much, nicer quality i guess we'll find out, today so i actually started testing some, of the colors on the test print double, test and i was gonna like you know take, the time to plan everything out i was, gonna be a good artist for once but then, i got bored and i'm like enough planning, i just want to art so getting into it a, big part of my reason for getting fancy, with the paper is that i wanted, something that was going to hold up, nicely with the watercolor and not get, all, like what paper do now i've actually, never looked into how to properly use, watercolor pencils might have been a, good idea before i use them in front of, potentially millions of people they are, very appealing to me because i love, using colored pencils and i love using, watercolor however using pencils on, large areas can be rather painful, watercolor is less painful but it's also, kind of difficult to control if you've, ever met water before it's all over the, place okay just likes to go everywhere, and drip and run, now that i've laid down a light layer of, pencil i'm just using a wet brush to, activate it and melt that color i don't, know i said that like i'm on a game show, i did like this process however it was, not perfect it worked great for some, colors while others really faded away, the blue in particular he just left us, he's like got a drink and i'm out of, here he was rude so i did have to go, back over all of it again to darken up, certain colors and it just was like a, little bit uneven and inconsistent but, it wasn't bad enough to change or start, over i did just continue with the same, process for the rest of the entire, rainbow and then we come to rain bear, the reason i added rain bear into the, group is mainly because the color, combination of pink orange and gray is, odd to me it's odd i don't love it i, didn't really choose it i had to go with, it because that was the color of the, chip clips so i want to add another, color to put in there does adding blue, to this color scheme really help out i, feel like maybe green or teal but i went, with this rainy blue and if you notice, something different about the sadness of, rain bear you're absolutely correct this, is no ordinary sadness this is not my, hat's on too tight not to dismiss you, grumpy cat your feelings are real but, rain bear feels the weight of the, world's sadness if you've ever felt sad, rain bear cried a tear for you so the, next time you feel sad double it because, you're not only sad but you're making, rain bear cry so feel guilty about that, it's not just rain bear who feels things, okay all the sky bears exist in the most, intense form of emotion cloudy bear is, not just tired he's exhausted in fact, it's rare to see him awake maybe a, couple times a year he opens his eyes, sunbear has this amount of bright energy, that's enough to scare you rainbow bear, is so painfully sweet she never says, anything negative it's so sweet it's, disgusting now i'm just finishing up, with the first layer of the art which is, the watercolor pencil that did work out, pretty well just to cover some ground, but it's definitely not looking nice the, next phase i'm gonna move on from the, watercolors and go in with my regular, colored pencils this is where i'm gonna, really try to brighten up some areas, bring in some shadows highlights, contrast dimension all the art words and, this is where i started to really have a, lot of fun with this coloring page like, i said i did enjoy coloring books at one, point in my life i did step away from, them pretty quickly mainly because for, me a big part of the fun with art is, coming up with the ideas you know i like, to create new characters and come up, with like stupid little stories that you, have to hear, and with coloring books the idea is, already worked out for you which for a, lot of people that's the appeal for me i, like to do my own thing you know i don't, like to be told what to do this was a, lot more fun for me personally because i, did kind of get the coloring book, experience but i also got to create my, own idea as well and speaking of my, ideas these are the sky bears right um, right but notice they're all daytime sky, bears what if there was a completely new, set of sky bears that rule the skies at, night, maybe one day i'll design the night sky, bears if you would like to see that if, not i mean let's be real i'll probably, do it anyway let me tell you i really, tried with this coloring okay i tried i, know it may not be the best remember, this okay this is what i come from but i, wanted it to look like the sun is, casting a bright yellow light on one, side of everything and then there's like, a bluish purple shadow of sadness that, is coming from rain bear and it's, creeping on the other side uh kind of, bummed that we didn't get to see rainbow, bears body not to sound creepy i mean, she does have a paw now which is great, love the paw but she's pretty much still, existing as a head um and that's, nobody's fault but my own because i drew, her like that but i didn't really, consider that i'd be robbing everyone of, the experience of seeing what the rest, of her design looks like i'm sad about, it oh my gosh i'm making rain bear cry, stop i'm sorry i'm not sad with the, coloring i really just kept on building, and layering really trying to get a nice, dynamic feel to it i wasn't going for, realism clearly but i am trying to like, get some dimension you know like make it, alive eventually i did get to a place, where i'm pretty happy with it and just, adding some last details and here is the, final piece i think this came out pretty, cool you can definitely see the texture, of the paper coming through i try to, like blend and cover over that i have, mixed feelings about it don't know if i, like it other than that i think it looks, pretty good i love the light of the sun, and how that looks in the rest of the, piece i'm so happy to have brought the, sky bears back and brought them more to, life than they were before i loved the, experience of this and being able to, combine digital and traditional art Ask HN: First Client IssuesI am a hiding my name because this is my first client and I don't want people to go looking for my company (though that might be great advertising).

I've got a client that I know through multiple relationship maps (former co-worker of my wife and sibling of a friend of a friend) and while I was not a friend of the sibling, I was an acquaintance.

Client has a cousin doing her Graphical Design but the GD doesn't have any web experience. GD sent over three PDFs, one of all the products, one of the website, and one of the website specs. The website specs did not contain sizing information for the images or the pages, it contained font/spacing/coloring/page flow information.

I asked the GD for the sizing of the web page and was provided an answer. There was some functionality in the site design which I discussed with the client and removed (GD was inaccessible) based on an agreement.

I finished the site and client reviewed making a few changes. Did a second review and then sent the link to the GD for their review. GD commented on the proportions being off and the distortion of some images. I agreed that the dimensions were off, but that's what I was told to go with and if the measurements I have are not right, I need to know what they should be.

I reached out to the GD via phone and e-mail. Did not hear back until I received an e-mail from the client to both of us.

Basically the e-mail's tone was that of threatening if I couldn't finish the project client would find someone who could and that if the GD can't get me the information than the Client doens't know what I'll need. And yadda yadda yadda.

So the question is:
Do I suck it up and make the changes or do I just write this off as a learning experience?

We're getting ready to launch and since I've enjoyed so many of the articles posted here I thought it would be great to get some feedback from the YC community.

Bidboxr.com is a unique blend of online advertising and online auctions. Instead of simply providing a site where sellers list items and bidders bid on those items, we've created an interactive ad banner that bring auctions to the bidders.

One of our major goals when we created bidboxr.com was to provide online entrepreneurs/startups with a profitable source of revenue. Think of it like Google's adwords/adsense model, but we're using interactive auctions instead of static ads. The auctions are relevant to the content of the page, so it's designed to draw users who are interested in that particular content. Imagine reading a blog post about a digital camera and looking at an ad on the side of the page showing an image of the exact same camera on sale and closing in 10 minutes for $50 with a big 'BID NOW' button beneath it. If you're interested in running an ad on your site simply sign up, add a few lines of code and when someone bids from your site you earn money.

I've started to do a few 'pre-launch' marketing tests to see which method would bring in the most users - so we've already started to see some sellers listing items. If you have anything you'd like to list or know anyone who might want to list some items - I'll remove all listing fees from anyone that list anything over the next few days.

,Ask HN: Why are browsers so bad at stopping popups and other dark patterns?Popups have long been an issue along with other types of ads, but the most infuriating kind I've ever seen are those which watch the mouse position and throw up an ad or subscription plea when I'm moving the mouse upwards to the tab bar after I've finished reading an article and want to close the tab.

Obviously blocking scripts' access to positional data would break many sorts of useful interactions, but there are far more pages that snag that data to display ads on mouseover or page border interactions which brings zero benefit to me as a user. Why is there no way to either pool that information among browser users to negate this dark pattern, or to remember my dismissive interactions of closing popups and pre-emptively negate them next time I visit a page?

Also, if you work as a designer or front-end developer who implements this sort of thing, I want you to feel bad about it and talk your money hungry marketing people out of it; because when your employers' revenue eventually sinks due to pissing off more and more of your readers, you'll get laid off looong before the marketing people do and if you don't stop and think you won't even understand why..
,Ask HN: Bootstrapping; should I buy a site template?I'm bootstrapping a recruiting process outsourcing consultancy for internal HR and recruiting staff and want to get a start on marketing, but don't have the funds for a designer and I haven't touched anything HTML related since 1998.

Is it advisable to throw the $50 at a template from ThemeForest or one such site early in the game? It would likely just be a landing page with an overview of services, and a contact form or phone number, I've received some validation on my concept in the form of an HR manager saying to come back in Q2 and they'll have the budget to talk about signing an agreement. So if anything, it'd be a very temporary site until successfully closing my first client.

I'm not selling a consumable product, nor is it SaaS, just an outsourced business process and I can swallow $50 much more easily than the costs for a designer to put together the type of site I'd be looking for.

Any feedback would be immensely appreciated!.
,Ask HN: Website Idea, Online resumes done righttl;dr: Your online resume.

Backstory: August of last year, after a year and a half from my last startup closing down, I decided it was time to get back to work. The time had been spent with my family, and watching my son in his first year. It was a good time. But getting back to work would mean getting a job, and at the time, I was more concerned about a solid pay check. Obviously, in this economic climate, it was a bit scary, but I had ample experience and was confident I could land a job. I went to work. I had to create a resume, and then get it up online. I bought the domain name, and put it up there. Spent quite a bit of time getting it right. In the end, this is what allow my current employer to find me. A search on Google came up with my resume as the first result, provided the proper contact information, and made it easy for them to get in contact with me. After interviews and negotiations, I got the job.

My brother is in a situation like this as well. He's part of the inspiration for this project. The idea is that I had to spend time putting together the website, the design, even as simple as it was, and making sure it got up on the search engines. None of this was difficult for me to do, but for someone like my brother, he doesn't even realize it's something he should do. A resume on Monster.com isn't geared toward the masses and SEO. It's geared toward Monster.com searching.

Since leaving school, I've gotten all my jobs because someone knew me somehow and recommended me in some capacity. Of those, 3 of them also included what I did online. One, in fact, included me walking into the interview with a stack an inch thick of what the interviewer had found online about me.

The reality is, most people get jobs through word of mouth. Someone knows someone, or their is some common ground. At least the good jobs.

So, the idea for the site is bred from some simple ideas:

1. It's good to have a website dedicated to your resume. To promoting yourself. You want a search result with your name to return your resume, your own personal advertisement, rather than some random Facebook page.

2. You want to always be promoting yourself. The job market has changed, and you want to be out there. If someone is interested in searching for you, you don't want them to have to go searching for more information. You want that information to be easily found.

3. Most people don't have the time or energy to invest in creating an highly optimized online resume. Couple this with the cost of having to buy hosting, and the price can get a bit high just for a place to put an online resume.

4. People need jobs. In the current market, job hunting has become even more important. People are becoming aware that it's important to always be prepared to find a job. If you aren't actively pursuing a better job, you're hurting yourself.

5. For far too long, job hunting has been employer-centric. Advertise a job, receive resumes. People are coming to accept that advertising their own skills is becoming important. Social networks are, in a way, teaching people to put their lives online in an orderly fashion; a personal resume.

6. Employers focus too much on accepting resumes instead of getting what they want. It's difficult for employers to find people with the skills they need on their own, without going through an agency. Even then, it's still focused on hiring unemployed people or people that are actively looking.

These are pretty broad ideas, but rather simple. They describe the problems, the issues at hand. The service seeks to solve these problems in various ways, to service not only the potential employees, but the employers as well.

1. Simple to use. The site is focused on providing an efficient, professional resume. You fill in the blanks. The goal is to be fast, painless, and get up something good, quick.

2. The service is meant to be long term. Year-long terms here. The idea goal is for the resume to be a 'living resume.' It updates itself, or you update it, with the current status. It's smart. A year goes by, and 5 years of experience becomes 6, for example. You are encouraged to update.

3. Everything is optimized. The page itself is optimized for search engines. The design will be optimized for easy viewing. Easy printing. Easy sharing. SEO will not just be on the resume itself, but also for searching. Need a Rails Developers in Atlanta Georgia? We'll make that easy to find.

4. You're always promoting yourself. The goal is to make a search for your name appear at or near the top of the search result. This is, after all, your page with your professional information.

5. No ads. I mean, the entire site is basically an advertisement, each page for a particular person, if you want to get technical, but no flashing banner ads, text ads, etc.

6. Low cost. Pay a yearly fee, something reasonable.

There is a lot of potential for expanding the services offered. Being able to put up a portfolio would be important. Pictures of yourself if you wanted. Customization through CSS.

Standards would be important. Exporting contact information as well as the resume itself. All the data would be used and indexed on. Searching and pages could be made on anything.

Anyway's, that's a brief overview of the idea. There are tons of other specifics, and other ideas, as well as ways to go about marketing it and getting users. My questions are simple:

1. Would you pay for a service like this?
2. Do you know others that would pay for a service like this?
3. Have you ever built an online resume/portfolio?
4. Would this service benefit professionals in industries outside web developers?
5. Would businesses outside web-based/focused companies use such a means to find employers?

I'm sure there are other questions, I'll have, and frankly, you don't need to answer these questions point by point. Just wanted to give you an idea of some of the initial questions I might have. Any input at all is encouraged.

As a final point, I've searched online for a service like this, and while I've found a few that promote the same basic thing, I haven't found anything that really capture what I would want in a service. In tech-terms: a Web 2.0 Online Resume site.

I've put a lot of thought into this, played around with some initial designs, hacked up some code, but at this stage, I'm more eager to gain some initial feedback before investing heavily into this idea. So, have at it.

,Ask HN: A Rapportive-esque Email CRM for small businesses and startups?As a small startup that sells to enterprises, we've been looking high and low for a collaboration-centric CRM that bridges the gap between the email and CRM silos, yet we've found almost every solution we've tried wanting, and we've tried a handful to say the least.

While we interact with our customers primarily via email, because most commercial CRMs are a completely separate silo, multiple problems arise:

-We have little or no context (about contacts or opportunities) while looking at an email, although we might have added relevant information / notes to the CRM.

-The email inbox and the CRM are eternally out of sync, necessitating a lot of duplicated data entry and resulting in incomplete account / opportunity information.

-The context-switching overhead associated with frequently toggling between email and the CRM.

What we've really been looking for:

1) Activity Feed: A simple, concise stream of updates for each and every account / opportunity, so we're all on the same page and we've recorded the entire history of our interactions with a customer for posterity.

2) Email Bridge: When the CRM is a separate silo, a huge amount of duplicate data entry results. Tight email integration via a Rapportive-esque widget for GMail / Outlook that lets me associate mails with opportunities, and view contextual information within the inbox. This includes email-CRM sync, so that contacts are up to date.

3) Task Management: A basic task manager that integrates with my calendar and email (the ability to create tasks from emails and have them appear in my calendar) .

4) Simple CRM: The ability to create accounts / opportunities and add collaborators.

5) Mobile: A simple mobile web app to access contacts / relevant data when on the move was imperative.

6) Basic Reporting: A concise dashboard that lets me visualize a few key metrics (optional).

What we observed (I'm covering only some of the more famous tools that we tried. I don't mean to criticize these tools, I'm only trying to point out that they did not work for our use-case):

-Sugar CRM, while infinitely malleable and extensible, was never built for collaboration.

-Salesforce: The same might be said of SalesForce - too complicated / clunky, too focused on reporting / analytics, and too expensive for a small team anyway.

-Fat Free CRM was a bit too spartan and ended up being inflexible to the point that we had to discard it.

-Insightly, a CRM that integrates deeply with Google Apps seemed promising at first blush, but we found it far from usable from a collaboration standpoint. Too many clicks needed to get anything done.

-Highrise was simple and well designed, but their email integration was far too convoluted for our liking.

-Zoho CRM seemed to possess most of the features that we were looking for, but the user experience left so much to be desired that we had to walk away.

-While Rapportive and Xobni certainly have their merits (and I'm a big fan), they're too basic and contact-centric to really considered sales CRMs.

So, is there a simple CRM for startups and small businesses that integrates tightly and plays well with email? Is this a pain point that resonates with any other HNers?

NOTES:

1] I'm aware that a)CureCRM and b)Xobni Pro + the SalesForce Gadget are approximate enterprise versions of what we're looking for, but a small startup like ours cann't afford to use SalesForce.

2] Nimble CRM is a new social CRM for Google Apps that looks quite interesting. They try to be your consolidated inbox, and I'm a bit loath to use anything other than good old GMail for email. I will give them a spin, though..
,Ask HN: Lyrics website startup?Over on reddit this weekend there were a few threads about how awful lyrics websites are, and talked about a bunch of their problems.

Naturally, being in this community for so long I see something like this as an opportunity. I started a thread over asking what people would like to see in a new Lyrics site (on reddit). That received minimal attention but I got a bit of feedback:

-No annoying adds (playing sound, irrelevant, covering the text)

-Easy searching that works

-Simple design

-Categorization

-Stop messing with my browser behaviour (selecting, right-clicks)

Now, I have some half-way decent ideas about how to set up the thing, such as letting it be a community run site similar to how sites such as stack-overflow are moderated. I also have some long-goals, such as attempting to get lyrics data direct from labels and link directly to their preferred supplier for that music (however, I don't think this is revolutionary).

The biggest thing in my mind would be a lyrics site that doesn't take hours to load, get out the bloat of junk, and let it be a community run thing with tagging and moderation.

I'm the sort of person who thinks things too far into the future and too broadly on the horizon, so my main concern with this is that I've made my target so large I don't have a project that I can complete in short order with minimal complications.

My key theory is that people will use my site because it will be an open community, and not bloated with junk. I'm planning on something like google ads onto the page as the primary form of monetization.

Have I gone too far, or missed something critical that I should stop and look at, or should I put fist to the keyboard and bang this thing out over the next few weekends?.
