hello everybody, so this week i wanted to do some drawing, um that is not necessarily just like, drawing something you see, but drawing something that you, can kind of read a description about, which is a lot different because you, don't have, something exact there to look at to draw, from, you have a description that you can they, can kind of be interpreted in different, ways and so, this is something i like to do and it's, really fun to do from the bible which, i've done before, in the past i've done drawing what the, leviathan might look, like from the bible drawing what angels, might look like from their descriptions, in the bible, and then today for this week we are, going to draw, david and goliath from their, descriptions, and so before we draw, we kind of want to read the description, of the bible, kind of dissect it a little bit and see, what kind of information we can get, from the description in the bible, so what i'm going to read is first, samuel, chapter 17 verse 4 through, 7. and this is the description of, goliath in the bible, so it says a champion, named goliath who was from gath, came out of the philistine camp his, height was six cubits and a span and, i'll, get into that measurement in a second, here, he had a bronze helmet on his head and, wore a coat, of scale armor of bronze weighing 5 000, shekels on his legs he wore bronze, greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his, back, his spear shaft was like a weaver's rod, and its iron point weighed 600 shekels, so from that description we can, kind of figure out a few things on how, big goliath was what he was wearing what, it kind of looked like, so um the word cubit that we have right, here, c-u-b-i-t-s, it comes from the latin word uh cubitus, which basically means elbow um and so, and how this is translated into a form, of measurement, uh is measuring from your elbow, to the tip of your finger, so that's not a very uh precise, measurement because obviously people, have different lengths, from their elbow to their tip of their, finger, but different cultures um in history, used, a specific measurement, for that qubit word, so like the smallest was around like, um i forget the exact, inches but if we translate that into, the height that it says here which, is his height was six cubits and a span, that measurement can be translated in, different ways like i said different, cultures like, egypt and israel they had slightly, different measurements for that word, the cubit word and the shortest, that goliath was estimated um, and this is from like historians and um, people who studied the bible in history, the shortest was probably around, six feet five inches so you can see that, that's tall, for um these days, but it's not like a giant right, and then the tallest was around nine, feet four inches is the estimated, height depending on which place you take, that qubit measurement from, and i think the tallest person ever, recorded like, we have pictures of um, was a little over eight feet and so you, can, you could probably guess from that that, goliath if he was around nine, nine feet that's like a real giant and, the bible says he was a giant so, we could it wouldn't be uh too, far-fetched too soon that he was around, nine feet, um but he was probably around seven-ish, to nine-ish feet um that's what most, people think, based upon these measurements that are, in the bible so we know he's tall, um he had a bronze helmet on so we have, that, information it's pretty clear he has a, bronze helmet he has, it a, looking for his coat okay so he has a, bronze helmet on his head and wore a, coat of scale, armor of bronze weighing 5 000 shekels, and so 5 000 shekels in, pounds uh is, 125 pounds so he wore, this guy was strong and he was huge and, he wore a scaled, coat of armor that was bronze that, weighed 125 pounds, and then it goes on to say his spear, shaft was like a weaver's rod and his, in its iron point weighed 600, shekels we got that sheckles word again, and this comes to about 25 pounds so he, was wielding a spear, and just the tip alone weighed 25 pounds, which is crazy so we know he was, very strong very big he was wearing an, iron helmet, her uh bronze helmet he was wearing, bronze scaled, coat of armor and he was also wearing, um bronze greaves, it says on his legs yeah so on his legs, he wore bronze greaves, so we kind of have know what his armor, would look like, we know he has a sword obviously because, after david, hit him with a stone he used goliath, sword to cut off his head, um in the bible and so that's kind of, our description we have of goliath now, let's move on, to david and this one's pretty simple, because we know he was, a shepherd boy he was a he was pretty, young he had older brothers in the army, if you read, um through these chapters about david, and goliath, he had three older brothers who were, fighting um, in this battle pretty much and that's, the reason he even went there is because, he was bringing bread to his brothers, and other things, and from not only this verse, or these verses and the fact that in, israel at that time you had to be 20, years old to fight, um the fact that he had three older, brothers who already in the um, fighting and then if you go along the, lineage in the verses, and when he got married when his parents, died, in the bible because it records all that, most people think he was around, 15 to 19 years old, so he's still pretty young even in the, verses they call him a boy, so we know that he was young he wasn't, considered a man yet, um so the youngest was probably around, 14 or 15., uh and most people think it was between, like 14 to 15, 17 19 so uh so he's pretty young so we, can assume he's pretty small, and obviously he was a lot smaller than, goliath because, um i mean goliath pretty much just, laughed at him when he saw him, walking towards him because he was a, just a tiny boy, who he the goliath thought had no chance, against him so, uh he was a he was also a shepherd boy, so, um and i think it even mentions that he, just wore a tunic like he, didn't have armor on they tried to give, him an armor and sword and shield and he, told them that he couldn't carry it, because he was too little, so from these descriptions we know that, he was pretty small he, wasn't wearing armor so that's what, we're gonna go off of, and so what i'm gonna do for this video, i'm gonna draw, what i got from this verse what i, imagine in my head reading it, um using the description we got um, kind of digging into like the, measurements and all that, you can either draw along with me, on this pretty much draw what i do i'm, not going to actually do like a super, finished polished drawing because i want, to kind of just do it real quick to show, you, and then you can either follow along but, then i want you to kind of take it a, little further, make it look nicer and cleaner or you, can, watch this video and then maybe go off, by yourself and draw what you kind of, imagined goliath, and david and goliath to look like okay, and this might help you too i'm going to, show you how i kind of draw people and, get their poses and everything, so first i'm going to draw goliath i'm, going to draw goliath in the background, and then, maybe david up here in the front looking, towards him, so david might look a little bigger in, the picture but that's just because the, perspective that i'm doing it in, so i'm drawing the head first, the pose i'm going to do for goliath is, kind of a very proud pose because, goliath was a very, proud person from the verse he's, taunting, um the people the israelites and, uh like i said he even laughed at david, when he saw him so he's very proud i, mean he's a, giant basically just a giant man so, he had nothing to be afraid of when, looking at the, the people he was coming up against so, i'm drawing, i'm drawing these middle lines to kind, of show where things are so this is the, middle of his face this is going to be, the middle of his chest here, um i'm just drawing details and i'm, going to draw over most of this but this, helps me to make things look right, so we got the torso there and everything, i'm going to draw him one leg out this, way, and i'm also i'm gonna draw goliath very, muscly i mean i know like he's just a, big guy, from his description and if you're that, big anyways you're gonna be pretty, strong you'll be able to hold a giant, spear that weighs 25 pounds or more, but i'm still gonna drown strong because, obviously he was intimidating, because nobody wanted to fight him, i think this is a cool cool verse also, this whole story is just cool because, it's good for um at least for me when i, was younger i liked it because, it really kind of helps, if you're younger it kind of like shows, you that, even though people might look down on, you or that not much is expected of you, that you can still do great things, and that's that's what a lot of the, verse is about it's about having faith, it's about standing up for what you, believe in um, being a christian like uh, trusting god and just, kind of showing how strong our god is, and then it's also like i said about, uh like the soldiers told david he, couldn't do it because he's just a, little boy and like, they didn't want him on the battlefield, they said the only reason he was there, was, because he wanted to see the fighting, because he obviously couldn't join yet, because he wasn't old enough, his older brothers were there but, it's a good story about um, you're never too young to make a, difference all right so, this is my pose for goliath he's going, to be standing on a rock, like i said he's going to be looking, very proud of himself, um and also in the verse and uh based, on the location like we know exactly, where this battle took place, now it's pretty cool there's basically, two hills of the valley in between, and the philistines were on one side, they were all over here and i'll draw, more of them later but i'm gonna draw, little shadows of people along the ridge, and then the israelites were on, the other side um, there's these two hills philistines were, on one side israelites were on the other, side there was this valley in between, and that's where, david killed goliath is in that valley, because, that's where goliath was going out to, like basically announce, and taunt all the people and telling, them that to choose a fighter to come, and face him, all right so i'm not going to draw all, of david i don't think i think i'm going, to draw, his head and this is going to be weird, because i'm drawing him from the back, so he's going to be looking up towards, goliath, i'm going to draw him shoulders up, kinda like that, back, i'm gonna draw his arm up maybe like, that, so this is even going to be challenging, for me i don't usually draw these kind, of angles but i'm going to go ahead and, try it, you guys will be able to see me, experiment make mistakes which i do a, lot, so i'm going to draw him like this his, lit, legs kind of spread out because he's, he was running towards goliath when at, least uh in the verse it says they ran, he ran towards him and took up his sling, i'm gonna draw it his hand, like this, with the sling, [Music], and the stone in it like, uh that actually might make it more, because if you, think about it if he's swinging this, around it's probably going to be pretty, straight with the stone in it so i'm, going to draw like, this and like this maybe you'd be able, to see the stone a little bit in there, yeah that's better do a little bit of, that, the other end of this thing coming out, this way, and i'm going to draw some lines to just, kind of show motion, you don't want to make them too dark, because it's not like an actual physical, thing there, like that all right, when i imagine david, since they're from like the middle, eastern kind of area, kind of imagine some curly hair it's, gonna be dark, probably won't be very clean cut or, anything, but i'm just gonna do this just to show, the hairs there, not gonna add too much detail right now, or anything, that looks pretty good maybe make it a, little darker, and then his tunic so i'm gonna make it, like short sleeve which it probably was, it's because it's a warmer climate there, gonna have it kind of ball up right here, and show some wrinkles so that he has, like a, kind of a belt or waistband on, he did have a pouch uh because he has, his, um the stones the smooth stones that he, got from the brook, and the verse we put him in a pouch, and then kind of like a essence it's a, tunic, it's not really like pants or anything, it's just kind of like a, a long shirt almost it's the best way to, explain it, and then kind of not really drawing too, much detail on this hand because i don't, need it, that's one thing about art and drawing, and like illustration, is sometimes it's very not sometimes a, lot of the time it's very important to, know, when to add detail and when it's not as, important so like this hand we don't, really, have that much focus on this hand and, we do have a lot of focus on this hand, because it's the one he's, swinging his sling on and i'm trying not, to make him look too, muscly because like i said he's younger, not that you can't be strong if you're, younger but compared to goliath i don't, want him to look too big, get some detail there, you can see it's looking pretty good i'm, going to erase, some of the slimes you can clearly see, that it's a, yeah yeah that looks good, i'm gonna draw a lot of what i do with, the fingers is like the two the index, finger and the middle finger you kind of, see, and then the other fingers kind of fold, over a little more so you don't really, see him as much, oh my god that's one of those things, where you don't want to have too much, detail, like that it looks pretty good right um, shade in his stone, like that there we go so now i have, david, he's getting ready to sling that stone, and now i'm gonna work on goliath so we, know, he has a bronze helmet which, i'm just gonna draw the way i imagine it, to look so, you can draw a different bronze helmet, um you could draw this one if you kind, of don't know exactly what to draw, while we're doing this video you guys, can pause it, if you need to you can go back anything, you need, to follow along i'm not gonna give it, too much detail in his eyes or anything, because he's far away, she's kind of like shadowed he's also, wearing that helmet so you might not be, able to see his eyes very good, i'm actually gonna give my, goliath some facial hair, doesn't say anything about it but i, always imagine him having some kind of, beard or something, um okay, so there's my bronze helmet um next, thing i would say, he has that coat of armor, actually give him a little detail on the, clothes there, so the armor i'm gonna give him a, belt, to hold the armor on it's going to be a, short sleeve, kind of like david's in my drawing, and then i am going to, she's going to have the same kind of, thing where it's the, almost like a tunic, i'm going to erase some of this stuff, and then i'm going to add the scales, because it says it's, plated or scaled, and bronze which is crazy and remember, this thing is, 125lbs of armor, just in the coat of armor, which is crazy and i don't think it's, just for, for show it was just because goliath was, so big, that this armor that had to be made big, enough to fit him, weighed that ended up weighing that much, which is crazy, which is another reason we know he was, so huge, it's not just a, a big guy who's you know like six foot, or something he's probably bigger than, that based on, the verses all right so i'm going to, start adding a little more detail on, things, adding some muscle and the legs, um let's go into the arm here i'm gonna, give him some, [Music], kind of arm guards just to make him look, like he has more armor, she probably did, i'm going to give him the spear in this, hand, i'm gonna make it, and it says, bronze javelin, and javelins are usually a pretty long, kind of narrow spearhead on them, and this is just assuming that the, javelin it's talking about, is also the spear that he's holding, another thing that's kind of cool in the, verse at the very end of uh, verse 7 it says his shield bearer went, ahead of him, which means that his shield was probably, so heavy that he didn't want to hold it, so there's a separate guy to just hold, his shield, which is pretty crazy all right and so, what i'm going to do, is have his sword kind of slung around, his back, on a kind of like a sheath on his back, so it wouldn't be in his way i'm going, to just draw the, the sheath like that, i'm gonna draw the sword with a round, kind of guard on it maybe make it a, little bit smaller, [Music], this right here is the sword that uh, david used, to be head goliath after he had killed, him, to prove he brought to the king, king samuel, there a little bit detail there that, looks good, like i said i'm not spending too much, time on this i would like you guys to, maybe, you know add more detail maybe make it, look a little cleaner but, all right so i'm going to give him some, bronze greaves like it says and the, graves are kind of, almost like a shin guard sometimes, they'll come up up to the knee, i'm just gonna make these pretty simple, i don't need to be anything crazy and, then i'm going to give him barefoot, bare feet because usually they wore, sandals, back then, some straps on there and then the bottom, of the single and there's his foot, you kind of see already made a toe on, this one because i was already planning, on making a, barefoot with sandal there we go looks, pretty cool, i'm not giving him anything in this hand, he's just kind of you know, clenching it menacingly, and then i don't know why i always, imagine him with a cape, i think i'm gonna have the cape, go this way i like to do like a, fold over like that so it kind of looks, like the wind is maybe blowing the, cape, and then the cape goes up over here, and you go around there, i'm gonna show the edge of the cape, there because it's folding and blowing, the wind, maybe shade it in a little bit to, distinguish it from the rest of his body, do some simple shading very quick just, to, show you guys, and i'm going to show you the, sword sheath in maybe a little darker, all right so like i said i'm actually, not going to do all of it but, you could shade in draw a bunch of, people standing up here, very simple like silhouettes because, they're so far away you can't really see, them, but these are the, philistines, over here on the one side behind goliath, probably cheering them on, probably making fun of david give them, some spears, maybe some shields or something just to, show that they're soldiers up here, i don't know what this is the spears, kind of turned out a little crazy, maybe some swords i don't know you can, get creative with that but, they're all the philistines behind, goliath kind of cheering them on, taunting david, maybe draw a little shadow down here, real quick, all right so i think that's mine for now, um yeah so like i said you guys can, either try and draw like this, um it's a little difficult drawing, somebody from the back like here, um i think i did okay i did pretty good, uh i don't usually draw, people like that that often so i think, it turned out pretty good um, but you guys can either follow along and, just draw what i drew, like i said i went off of the the verse, so that's where all my details and, why i drew things the way i drew them, came from, you can either draw that follow along do, what i did, pause it rewind if you he you have to, um or you can watch this get some ideas, maybe, um and then draw what you imagined, um the fight between very short fight, between dave and, goliath would have looked like maybe you, could, kind of watch the beginning of the video, see how i draw the poses before i add, details, maybe pause it and then draw what you, imagine it to look like and then see, what how ours turned out differently, um but yeah i always enjoy drawing from, just descriptions it's a lot different, than drawing from an actual picture, but yeah there's a lot of cool, inspiration in the bible, tons of it um there's a lot always so, much descript, um versus describing things that you can, go from, so yeah i'm excited to see what you guys, uh, draw from this and, have a great week
