when it comes to coloring pages coloring, the background can often be one of the, most, intimidating parts because you are, essentially starting from a blank, canvas so today we are exploring some, different ideas to color your background, and we are going to be trying some, different masking methods, so if you remember back to my video two, weeks ago i received a box of art, supplies from upcrate and one of those, supplies, was a masking marker now that triggered, quite a few comments from you guys, and some ideas for myself that we should, try using that for some coloring pages, and i think that masking markers and, masking fluids and masking papers, are a great solution to being able to, apply a whole bunch of different methods, to our backgrounds of our coloring pages, so i wanted to give it all the go today, so to follow on a little bit from that, whole art subscription box theme, i'm trying all of these masking supplies, for the first time today, and i'm going to then try some new, techniques for the backgrounds that are, also, new to me i've been buying supplies like, pastels, i've bought some ranger inks that people, usually use for card making, and i've got some other supplies that, i'm going to be using as a brand new, today, because i usually stick to markers and, pencils so you get to watch me learn, this stuff, for the first time because i really, think that experimenting is also part of, the process, and if i can do it you can do it so, let's start with the drawing gum that we, got, in that upgrade box i have printed off, my four collections, of coloring pages from the nature sea, life maritime and uplifting collections, you can find them all on my website i, will pop a link in the description, i've been using some of these in past, videos and i'm using them again today, because they are some of my favorite, pages from my website, i am going to use the adventure begins, this picture of a glass bottle, because i've been a little bit um, avoiding this one, because the glass and the water a little, bit scary but, today is all about experimenting and, taking risks and trying new things, so i'm doing it together with you let's, hope it works, so you activate the drawing gum just, like you activate a paint marker, oops, i think the downside with this, particular marker, is that it does dry quite quickly and it, doesn't like you going over the same, area twice so it kind of builds up a bit, and then it, kind of clogs up the marker slightly so, coloring big areas like what i'm doing, now with the paper, isn't really what it's designed for so, maybe another method would be better, there as well, um but definitely for those fine details, it is quite effective, yeah definitely this is meant to fill, such a big area i'm probably wasting a, lot more of this than i should, but this is for the sake of, experimenting, so because this is a water theme i, wanted to try some kind of creative, water background and because we're using, masking i wanted to do something that we, couldn't traditionally do, if we hadn't masked off our area now i, previously did a five minute crafts, video where i, attempted a bit of a project of using, markers and water to create, an interesting effect that didn't quite, work, out but i kind of want to try it again, which is either a, good idea or a really bad idea so i've, taken all my different blue markers and, i'm just coloring on, a plastic sheet i was about to say a, plastic sheet of paper that it's not a, plastic sheet of paper, as you can see they're not actually, really absorbing into the sheet at all, that's the point, and because then when we apply some, water we can kind of control it and then, we will, transfer it to the paper so, using the markers with the water kind of, worked but it the, i don't know it didn't quite give the, effect that i wanted maybe because this, paper i'm testing on is a bit more, absorbent, um and then i've tried the markers, without the water, and that kind of didn't really work that, well either but i did notice that my, brush, has picked up a lot of the color and is, looking a lot like a watercolor paint, so i think we might end up using a bit, of a mix of these techniques but i, actually like the idea of using, the brush to paint with watercolors, using, our plastic here to create a watercolor, palette from our tombow paint markers, i probably should have used a different, kind of masking for the outside maybe, some masking tape, would have been a good idea, [Music], one thing to keep in mind is that if you, are going to be using wet mediums like, this you, need to use a thicker paper i'm using a, mixed media paper here and even, with the mixed media paper this is still, buckling a little, bit so i may have been better off with a, watercolor paper, some of the other methods i'll be trying, next are dry so that won't be an issue, but just something to keep in mind paper, does matter and i do have another video, with some, great recommendations on paper if you, need some help, knowing what to get, oh shane this was my soda water this is, my drink, this was supposed to be in my art water, that was my drink, that's sparkling oh well, now we have two art waters, so i've definitely added too much water, to this at once, i should have let some layers dry a bit, more in between because my paper has, buckled, but i think it'll i'm i'm not too, worried i think, we can kind of try to flatten it a bit, at the end and i think this is just part, of the learning curve for me i'm not, that familiar with wet mediums so, it's something that i'll work on and, it's all part of that learning process, now the goal this video is more about, the masking, so i really don't want to get too caught, up doing this whole page but i do feel, like we just need to quickly, fill in our sky here so i'm just going, gonna use the same approach, and quickly just give us a blue sky, very roughly um and then we're gonna, have a go at filling in this bottle on, top, because then we can pull off the masking, and see what we get, so for our glass bottle we are going, with green, okay pause i need to take off this mask, before i do this because this is, supposed to be inside the bottle now, let's try taking it off by rubbing, you can see where i've missed a few, spots so we have a bit of a speckled, look on our paper, but otherwise it does seem to work, pretty well, [Music], next up we have the molotow art masking, liquid pump marker, this is also a little bit like a paint, pen but it has, soft tip instead of the other one that, was that hard tip, it's also a little bit thicker than the, last one and, it comes out quite blue so it'll be, interesting to see if this is easier to, use or harder to use than the other one, we've just tried, so again you need to give it a good, shake pump it and then you can draw, this is a great idea if you want to, color the whole page twice, i don't know that i'm keen on doing this, actually this is gonna be a lot more, work than i anticipated, so i can't rub this off it says that i, need to peel it off, but i'm not sure how to do that but when, i've tried to rub it off it's, taken off the top coat of my paper, so i'm glad that i tested this before, doing this, whole page because that would have been, devastating if i had done this, and then discovered this then so we need, to figure this out before i go any, further, easy to peel off okay so just looking at, some reviews online, most people love this but there's a, couple of people that have had the same, problem so it either comes down to, technique, or paper choice so i don't think this, paper's gonna work, so i'm a little bit unsure about this, one now because it seems to work really, great on some paper but then, when i'm trying it on my nina it's, ripping the paper up, so this might be one that if you're, going to use definitely, test it before committing to a big art, piece because you'd hate to ruin, your beautiful art after you've put in, all that effort so because i still, really want to test this out properly, i will use my strathmore bristol, and i've got a light board here so that, i can transfer my artwork, to this paper i knew this light board, was going to come in handy for something, one day, this was just a 20 light board i picked, up off amazon, and it's perfect for tracing something, like this, and i can trace straight with my molotow, art masking liquid we will just, do the writing today and we will see how, that goes, so i know this isn't a coloring page, anymore but you can still, apply this next technique to coloring, pages even if you use a different, masking method, and that is pan pastels now shane, actually bought me this set of pan, pastels as a christmas gift and i have, been, waiting for an opportunity to use them, so i am very excited to, finally get to play with them a little, bit today i have chosen a color palette, from, the color catalog that i think is a, really good use of these wonderful, colors, and i'm just gonna have a bit of a play, around i'm not really familiar with, these but i think the concept, should be pretty straightforward so i've, got my little, uh swabs here and my stick here and i, think we're just gonna blend and just, um i don't know experiment so i don't, quite have, all of these colors but i am going to, sort of try to work, in a similar color palette here so we've, got our teal, we've got um a bit of a it's not really, blue but i think we could probably use a, blue, instead i think this one's probably a, better fit, and then we've got a purple um we don't, quite have that pink but that's pretty, close and then we've got a red, and then an orange and looking at that, that's probably a bit bright, okay we've got that or we've got this, to all of the pan pastel experts out, there please forgive me for my absolute, lack of technique hopefully this turns, out okay, and we can all laugh about it later, okay the moment of truth i really hope, this doesn't mess this up, let's peel, [Music], oh it's pulling up the paper again, i don't think this one's gonna work for, me, what we'll do is we'll erase this i'll, come in with my pencils and tidy it up, once i've erased, some stuff given that i need to rub this, off, and that my pastels aren't sealed and, pastels move when they rub, probably not a smart combination i, probably, next time if i was gonna do pastels, would use a different masking method, not a masking method that needs to be, rubbed, but i think i'm just going to embrace, the accidental erasing of the background, and then if i draw on top the, extra bit that i've erased might just, look like the letters are glowing, we're gonna work the mistake in, i just wiped my pastel fingers on my, white area, failing on multiple fronts here okay i, have this problem, because i actually really need to seal, the pastels, but if i seal them i don't know if i can, then take this masking stuff off because, i need to rub it, so i've really messed up in picking the, wrong, medium with the wrong masking type here, i think, in all in all i don't think this masking, fluid is suitable for this project at, all okay, we're gonna fix this with our posca fan, at this point the entire process of, having done that mask, feels like it was a complete waste waste, of time because, i could have just done the entire, background and then drawn this on top, with these first two pictures so far if, i'm being completely honest, i am a bit disappointed with how they've, turned out i do think, that if i spend some more time on them i, could keep working to create something, that i will be a bit happier with, and i will do that after this video but, i don't want to waste any more time now, because i do have more that i want to, show you i think, these masking pens that i have tried so, far are really, made for watercolors and so they're just, not gonna work, for coloring pages in the way that i'd, hoped the first one, ripped up some of the ink off my page, and the second one, ripped up the paper itself both of them, took a lot of time to apply and a lot of, time to remove and the end result wasn't, that different to something i could have, created just by adding a white pen, or white gel pens later on so i feel, like for me the effort versus the end, result probably wasn't worthwhile, the next one on my list is another, masking fluid, so i've actually decided based on those, first two that i'm going to give this, one a miss today because i do think the, results will be fairly similar, instead i would like to move on to, something completely different, masking film so there are two ways that, you can apply this, i am sticking it down first and then, using a knife, to cut it out it is quite thin so this, is definitely a good option, but you do have to be very careful not, to cut through to your artwork, i've got a lot to cut here sorry i'm a, bit nervous about this method, and you might prefer to actually place, it down on your paper and, trace your artwork before peeling off, the sticky back, that way you can cut it out separately, and put it down almost like a sticker, after you've cut the whole thing out i, think this method allows you to be a, little bit more accurate but you do have, that risk of cutting through to your, page, so it's up to you which method you want, to try maybe try both and see what you, find to be easier, it's quite handy that this has a glossy, finish because it's really easy to see, which parts i've cut out and which parts, are the paper underneath, and now we're ready to do our background, with, the ranger inks so once again, these are brand new still wrapped up i, have not had a chance to use them, today is the perfect chance to get them, out and experiment, hopefully not stuff it up completely but, this is the fun of trying new things and, it means that you guys can teach me, techniques as well, it does also mean that what i show you, is a beginner learning so if i can do it, you can do it too so i don't have a, whole lot of colors here because i, wanted to just buy a few, and test these out so our color palette, is kind of decided for, us today i assume this is supposed to be, done dry, i don't know am i supposed to wet this, or is it dry, do you apply it dry yes you do i think, well it's working so okay well that's, cool, [Music], whoa that's so pink, see it really lays down a smooth coal, though if you're wanting like a one, color background this is definitely a, good option, is there like a secret to getting the, color on these or do you just have to, keep, rubbing it i feel like i'm missing like, a step here or something, maybe someone can tell me in the, comments am i missing a step or is this, is this it is this just what you do i, think after this i'm gonna go watch, some youtube videos and see because i, could be doing this totally wrong, missing steps missing some really big, opportunities but, for now it's working, that actually blends together really, well, and that does not come off like chalk, pastels do, so if you're wanting that pastel like, look, there you go the distress oxides might, be the way to go, i do think i'm gonna buy some more of, these these are actually quite cool, and all the card makers are probably, like yeah we've been doing that for ages, what are you talking about, so i'm feeling much more confident about, this page than i did about our first two, projects, i should have used this opportunity to, also, use the masking tape around the outside, rather than waiting for another page to, demonstrate masking tape, i've had a lot of people tell me that i, should try the distress oxides and, the rager inks these ones are the tim, holtz range, but i'm really surprised at just how, well that works and for a coloring page, background to fill a large area with a, solid color and even more so with this, to be able to create a gradient from one, color to another, with such little effort and for it to be, so smooth i'm, really impressed i think i need to go, and buy, a lot more colors of these sorry shane, because, that is i'm actually a little bit blown, away i'll be very interested, um to see how pencils work on top of, this, and i just i'm actually in a little bit, of shock, let's see how our masking has coped, though with this, let's have a go peeling it off and see, how well it has worked i've, i'm feeling confident, that oh this is great the only thing, that's tricky is because this particular, image has so many little fiddly bits, because i cut out all the little holes, in between that it's sort of pulling up, a bit at a time whereas if you had one, big solid object, that would be easier but otherwise this, is coming off perfectly, you can see where i've sort of miscut, and that's my cutting that's actually, not, the film at all but otherwise this has, done a, really good job i mean i did pick a, pretty, ambitious shape to be masking off as, well, i could have picked something more, simple, [Music], i think it's fair to say this is the, first real success of the day, this background has come out really well, and the masking, film actually worked perfectly this is, one, i would comfortably recommend for, coloring pages i think it works great, still test it though first if you are, going to use it on the same paper, just in case it does catch on the paper, like we saw with some of those other, methods, because again you don't want to risk, ruining your art so for my last picture, i'm going to be using some masking tape, now you can buy masking tape anywhere, but not every masking tape is suitable, for paper some of it can be quite sticky, because it's obviously intended to mask, different things, now you can buy artist masking tape and, i did try and buy some online but it, didn't arrive in time for this video, so i'm going to try some with some, different masking tape, and i'm also going to try some washi, tape so washi tape is probably more, expensive, because it's intended to be decorative, but if you have some spare washi tape, lying around, it's perfect because it is a low, strength adhesive, so it's not going to rip up the paper, generally speaking, please still test this first like with, everything else i've said, because you don't want to ruin your, artwork and this time i will mask off, our border because i keep saying i'm, going to, and i don't so we will so with painters, tape, you would generally think of straight, lines but you can actually curve this as, well the key is to just work in small, areas, make cuts when you need and just work, around the edge, this is not going to work for fine, details like some of the examples we've, done previously, this is better when you've got a, straight or curved line in a bigger area, like what i'm doing here with this ocean, down the bottom, so much like the masking film you can, put this down and trace it and cut it, and just be careful not to go through, or you can fold it like i'm doing to get, around the corners and around, curves, so let's try some washi tape as well on, the second half just to show you, i think actually the stanley knife, method works pretty well you get a, pretty accurate edge by doing this, so this is worth getting used to these, are quite, thin so with the slightest pressure you, can cut through them, you just have to be careful not to cut, through to your page, but if you're not comfortable cutting, just fold around the edge, you just need to make sure that very, edge of your piece, is straight it actually doesn't matter, if the rest of your piece of tape has, creases through it, i'm just adding a second layer just to, make sure that i don't accidentally, spill over onto the other part of the, page, after saying two weeks ago that i hadn't, tried soft pastels before i actually, came across, this set of quality soft pastels, in my mom's old art supplies and, they are mango which is a brand that i, was, intending to buy and they are barely, used, so it does say in the bottom she bought, these in 2008, i don't know if pastel's age i know, pencils are fine, so i i guess we'll find out, so i've just added some final details, with some, pencils just to give it a little bit, more depth and the pastels made for a, really good layer underneath a really, good base, for this water so i'm actually quite, happy with how this turned out let's, take off our masking tape hopefully we, won't take the paper off and we'll see, how it turned out, i think that has worked really well and, that's something easy most of us have, some kind of masking tape or some washi, tape around, very easy to do very easy to apply, very easy to take off so we had some, wins we had some fails but i hope that, you've got some new ideas from today's, video, i think for me when it comes to coloring, pages i won't be using, the masking fluids or the masking pens i, think i will save those, for some watercolor projects or, something else down the track, because that is what they are intended, for i think they really need to be used, on that watercolor paper, with a heavier tooth probably the cold, pressed, because they just tear normal paper, apart, the masking film however and the masking, tapes, both worked great and they were able to, produce some amazing results, i think of everything i've tried today, the pan pastels and the ranger inks, were my favorites the pen pastels in, particular are something that i plan on, using a lot more, underneath my colored pencils and the, ranger inks i know are a favorite of, many card makers out there already, so i would love to see what you're, already doing with them or if you've got, some, other ideas for coloring backgrounds, that you would like to share, or that you would like to see me have a, go at please tell me in the facebook, group, show off your photos because these are, just a few ways that you can use these, tools, and like i said i am just a beginner in, each of these mediums, my strong point is pencils and markers, not these wet mediums not these other, tools but i, do plan on using them more so that i can, teach you guys how to use them better in, the future as well, if there is one thing i want you to get, out of today's video it's don't be, afraid to experiment, it is okay to make mistakes it is okay, to fail and trust me it's, far more nerve-wracking to fail in front, of a camera, than to do it at home by yourself but, it's when you allow yourself, to make mistakes and allow yourself to, fail that you actually open yourself up, to discovering new things, and learning new tools that you, otherwise wouldn't be able to, and if there's a second thing to get out, of this video it's that if you are, recording with pastel on your face, someone should really tell you sooner my, bad, you know the handy thing about having, stuff on my desk, is all of the hiding spots for my cups, of coffee

Ask HN: Please review my photos to coloring pages startupReallyColor.com officially launched about a month ago (end of Sep 2013) and is being bootstrapped by one of my partners and I. Our tech lets you convert your images into printable coloring book pages. Our primary target is parents (mostly moms) and people who are interested in turning themselves into sketches.

We are noticing a large amount of initial interest in the idea itself, and have seen some initial traction and traffic on our site, but our repeat visitors so far are barely over 10%. Our audience is also more international than expected. We have not built a mobile app yet, but that will be a project soon.

I would love feedback on:

1) Our membership pricing/offerings and what you think about how we tell the user about it.

2) Whether a monthly premium membership would be better than an annual one. Keep in mind our international audience.

3) Other revenue generating ideas (other than advertising).

4) The general user experience (both creating the free coloring page and as a free member).

5) How a mobile app could play into this given that the coloring pages are printable (via PDFs).

I have a ton of business and tech experience. I've launched several garage businesses. One did really well but the economy, circumstances and a perennially under-funded state (hardware is capital intensive) killed it. All were interesting experiences.

I've never raised any money. I self-funded everything I've ever done. The last one to the tune of over half a million dollars of my own money. I am no stranger to being all-in and putting it all on the line for something I believe in.

Circumstances are different now. Either I take my time and bootstrap from small to large projects or look for investors.

Sadly, I will not move to SV and I will not live on noodles. Bummer.

I have identified two opportunities I think have merit.

The first is a pure software web/mobile service. As is often the case, it is a twist on existing product. I believe the twist is what makes it very interesting, gives it wide appeal and could make it huge. It can go global. I have a 70 page deck covering just about every aspect of this venture. No, it's not a new Facebook. It's a B-to-B, C-to-C (and permutations thereof) service.

The second is a novel use of quadcopters. No regulatory issues I am aware of. Sizable world-wide appeal. This is definitely a case of first-mover advantage. With proper funding and support, execution would be fast and painless. This wouldn't be a an R&D project. This is a D project. Define, develop and go to manufacturing. Heard of "live long and prosper"? This one is "move fast and conquer". Probably the Klingon version. I don't have a deck on this one. It's a recent discovery of mine and I've put zero time into developing a deck. With one video I can show anyone this is a good idea.

When we started our careers in tech, we would often visit each other for lunch at these tech companies and we began to notice the same go/links everywhere. In the hallways, cafes, break rooms, posters. fliers and TVs, there would be these keywords prefixed with “go/” that allowed employees to quickly access information on their devices. The employee could enter a shortened URL like go/food into their mobile browser, or desktop, and could access the lunch menu for that day. An easy and simple concept, but an extremely powerful method for internal communication.

Although these systems are ubiquitous in large tech companies, we noticed there was nothing on the market that catered to startups, midsize, or non-tech companies. Companies usually don’t have the time or the resources to build sophisticated internal tools, so we set out to create GoLinks as a Service.

The challenge was building an internal tool for companies that may not have any internal infrastructure. For example, large tech companies have infrastructure so when you connect to the company Wifi or access the VPN, you can access the internal company network. This allows users to access the “go” domain on the network, which resolves the deep link redirection. For smaller and midsize companies, employees might be 100% remote or working in a coworking space, or maybe the company never got around to setting up an intranet. We had to build a product that did not rely on assuming internal infrastructure.

We were able to replicate the functionality of an internal network, and the simplicity of a short-link redirect system, by creating browser extensions for each of the popular browsers. The extension would proxy the “go” domain to our server and we authenticate and redirect the user to the correct location. Now coworkers can be on any network and any wifi, and as long as they authenticate in their current browser, we can find their company’s internal links.

We are startup-friendly—anyone under 10 users can get started completely free—but our main initial focus is on enterprise clients.

,Ask HN: How to deal with GDPR / cookie notices in the context of a crawler?To comply with the new European legislation many websites put a GDPR / cookie consent notice in front of their websites. There are different implementations of this. While some are only implemented as modal covering the website or bar on the bottom of the screens (in both cases right next to the original content), other implementations redirect the user to a totally different (sub-)domain or even hijack the request and show the consent form instead of the requested content (on the same URL with a 200 status code).

The latter ones present a issue to my crawler. I cannot access the content of the page without accepting those notices.

Things I'm considering to bypass those notices:

* US IP address (easy to implement, but some websites also display those notices to US IP's)

* Heuristics to detect those notices and accept them programatically (takes some time to implement - while a couple of vendors (i.e. OneTrust) offer off-the-shelf solutions which are easy to identify and automate, there are also many custom made solutions, so the system would need understand the concept of a consent form and how to bypass it - some forms only require the press of the right button, others involve checkboxes/radio buttons). To collect test data one solution might be to visit a set of websites once with an US IP, once with an EU IP and/or with different user agents (browser or googlebot).

Do you have any ideas how to approach this problem? Or are you even utilizing some techniques already and are willing to share them?.
,Ask HN: Lyrics website startup?Over on reddit this weekend there were a few threads about how awful lyrics websites are, and talked about a bunch of their problems.

Naturally, being in this community for so long I see something like this as an opportunity. I started a thread over asking what people would like to see in a new Lyrics site (on reddit). That received minimal attention but I got a bit of feedback:

-No annoying adds (playing sound, irrelevant, covering the text)

-Easy searching that works

-Simple design

-Categorization

-Stop messing with my browser behaviour (selecting, right-clicks)

Now, I have some half-way decent ideas about how to set up the thing, such as letting it be a community run site similar to how sites such as stack-overflow are moderated. I also have some long-goals, such as attempting to get lyrics data direct from labels and link directly to their preferred supplier for that music (however, I don't think this is revolutionary).

The biggest thing in my mind would be a lyrics site that doesn't take hours to load, get out the bloat of junk, and let it be a community run thing with tagging and moderation.

I'm the sort of person who thinks things too far into the future and too broadly on the horizon, so my main concern with this is that I've made my target so large I don't have a project that I can complete in short order with minimal complications.

My key theory is that people will use my site because it will be an open community, and not bloated with junk. I'm planning on something like google ads onto the page as the primary form of monetization.

Have I gone too far, or missed something critical that I should stop and look at, or should I put fist to the keyboard and bang this thing out over the next few weekends?.

I wanted to create my own virtual vending machine that has snacks I want to eat, and has more varieties. Healthy and still tasty. I tried hunting for solutions on the web without success. I started grocery hopping to discover new snacks for my work. Later I realize that its painful and I found more snack options than what's available in the supermarkets and more affordable too.

I started thinking more about the pain points and started some research. Next day I had the landing page ready using Launchrock. Launchrock is good if you just want something out quickly and attract early beta users but it's kind of limited in expressing your product. ,Failed for the past 12 years as an tech entrepreneurBack when I was 24, I pretty much hated my 9-5 job because of lack of control over my destiny, the limit of earnings and growth and the idea of going to the office every single day. I realized I could start something of my own.

So I started to look for something easy to do work on that would not consume a lot of my time. Blogs were a rage back then and multi-million dollar exits were quite common. I bought a domain and installed WordPress and started blogging after my working hours. I started a technology blog in the hope to replicate the success of Mashable and Techcrunch. I spent about 4 hours every night covering tech news about companies and social media in general.

2 years passed and I burned out myself. Traffic to the blog was flat and I was not making any meaningful money. I shut it down.

A few months later, I started a website that pulled information from Amazon and displayed dresses in a fancy and intuitive website. I opened a Facebook page, spent a lot of time marketing it and eventually made a grand total of 2 sales in a span of 3 months.

I decided to give up.

The very next year, I decided to build a note-taking web app that was a mash of Google calendar and a to-do list app. The idea was that people would see today's schedule by default and they would easily add and manage tasks.

I hosted it for a few months and lost interest due to a lack of customers.

After taking a break for a year or so, I decided to do something ground-breaking. I built my version of Facebook Groups/Slack that would allow people to share something interesting with others. You could create groups and add/remove people from them. The UI was fancy and a few of my friends and family loved it.

A few months after running it, I shut it down. I found it hard to justify its existence since everybody else was using Facebook groups and with the rise of mobile apps that allowed seamless sharing, my application made no sense.

Sensing an opportunity in media space again, I then started a news aggregator website that aggregated news titles from hundreds of outlets storing thousands of news articles per day. The website was smart enough to cluster the news articles based on topics which, Google news does well. People loved it and it got great reviews, but it was not growing fast enough.

And like earlier, I ran out of patience after 6 months and I shut it down.

After multiple failures, I decided to take a longer break. I had pretty much given up my entrepreneurship journey knowing there was no way I could build a reasonably successful business.

A year passed and I started to feel uneasy with myself and my day job.

So, I built a stupid web app that cleaned new articles by stripping them off of ads and showing only the relevant content. I shared it and got no real feedback from others. Nobody cared.

That's where it hit me, why not pivot to and a link management platform? I thought it's so easy to build and manage it. I could feel the tingling in my body. I built https://blanq.io/ with the excitement of a toddler.

I was so wrong.

I spent the next 1 year building the landing page, the entire web app plus some extra features in a hope that it will take off.

For the first 18 months, I had no paying customers. I put everything into this. All my previous experiences of failures and learning went into building this platform. "How could I fail?" I thought.

I then decided to stick to it and give myself 3 years to decide its fate.

On the 19th month, my efforts started to pay off. I landed my first customers then 2nd and then 3rd.... and so on. It's been 8 months since then and I now have 10 paying customers using my platform almost every day and growing every month.

My learning:

1.Don't quit too soon and don't be too hard on yourself.

2.With each failure, you do get better at not failing.

3.You improve at everything as time passes - marketing, programming, sales, operations..

I want to start in the tech community working to recruit editors/experts to build pages covering programming languages and popular technologies. Think of it as an alternative to blogs, tweets, and social link sites. Here an expert can build out a page with the most useful links and highlight news items that he/she knows are important to the community. Everything is tabulated into one easy to scan page. This is all managed via a drop and drop interface.

AirBnB recently hid all my listings. At the same time they cancelled over 19 bookings adding up to over $7000 dollars most likely more. Here is a copy of the email sent to those inconvenienced persons.

Dear xxxx,
We were just informed by John Cohen that your accommodation starting on xxx, April xx, 2012 (reservation xxxxxxx) is no longer available. You should know that hosts are penalized for canceling reservations and removed from our site if they do so frequently.

I am no longer able to access my account to see my future payouts -- approximately $2000 dollars -- or when I will recieve $954.

At the suggestion of an experienced attorney I have backed all information that was in my account including changes that were occurring after AirBnB shut off my listings.

I cannot prove what the customer service supervisor said over the phone but I will quote 'We have discussed it among ourselves', 'There are simply too many customer service requests from your account', 'You can apply in two months to be re-instated.'

After careful review of the backups it appears to be 21 bookings not 17. As of this date several guests are living in my home. Booked through airBnB. I have no idea if I will be paid for their stay. Here is a short list of my Complaints that resulted in AirBnb hiding my listings.

1) Peer review process as implemented is being used by a few guests as a threat of a 'Bad review' if I do not bend to demands for services not offered. Or if I attempt to enforce the House rules such as under age drinking or cleanig up after themselves.( Threse guests have no reviews of their own.)

2) Security Hole. Apparently airBnB does not maintain any information of the Guest of the guest.

3) CSR who answer the phones are given extraordinary power to rush to a judgement without giving the Host the benefit of the doubt.

4) Reservvation panel is a Mess if you are a busy Host. Dificult to make heads or tales from this. Even the CSR.

5) Bad reviews which are not opinion but statements of Fact. Say about the cleanliness of a Host. 'Place smells like Garbage' Bathroom's are dirty' by a guest who frequently broke house rules.

6) A clear and convincing connection between Guests who them selves have no reviews making a complaint or bad review on a Host who has asked them courteously to obey House rules.

7) Repeatedly blocking out up to 10 days or more on a room until an investigation is complete. Finding the Host acted properly

8) Many of my customer service calls were about parts of the WebSite not working or learning how to nagivate it properly. I have bad eye sight and need new glasses. EG recently a part of the listings page failed to show up where
prominently it states Host has PETS. Two guests allergic to Cats appeared.

. Though my listing clearly states CATS. I had to have my House keeper Vacume 2,000 square feet. So that the guests could finish their bookings. My cats were trapped in my bedroom for two weeks.

9) Security deposit is not a security deposit. Never in my Life have I been
compelled to negotiate with a petty thief

Their is a lot more. 24/7 is not 24/7 due to the lack of enouph Human Infrastructure to handle the Volume of calls. Resulting in knee jerk reaction's
and bad decision making.

I cannot help get the feeling that AirBnb in my opinion would like low end Hosts to quietly fade and disappear in to the night.

This one will not.

on those cold nights). The living room/kitchen/dinning room was ok,
and I liked the fact that there were other guests living there as
well and I met a lot of interesting people. I would recommend your
stay here if you want to save money, socialize with other cultures
and know how to clean after yourself (important part). It is up to
you if you want a clean room. The walls are really thin and sometimes
you can hear everything from the room next to yours, but overall, it
is good place for low price.

Lauren
Don't expect luxury & do not come
here if you're allergic to cats as John has 2 (very cute) or if you
don't know how to clean up after yourself (you will get told!). This
place is secure and very affordable for those on a budget, the
beds/toilets/towels are clean and John offers coffee every morning.
All in all, if you can forego any frills and live in a hostel
environment, this is a good deal. If not, try the Waldorf Astoria.

Viola
The place is just two blocks from the
subway stop and it really takes 10 minutes to get to Manhattan so is
ideal if you don't want to waste your day travelling. I have found
quite a friendly bunch of people living in John's loft and John
himself is a very helpful person. I would suggest to guests who have
never seen NYC to ask him tips on what's worth seeing in the City.
The constant presence of coffee in the place was, also, very much
appreciate!!! My overall experience was pretty positive and I would
recommend it.

great value for money. Expect no luxury, 'this isn't the
Waldorf-Astoria', as John would say. But it's a room, more or
less private, allthough you can hear everything that's going on in
the livingroom. But if you're in NYC for a few days, it's a great,
cheap spot. The room I rented had some temperture-issues, the heater
was a bit hard to control, and made some loud noises sometimes, but
John told me this in advance. He was helpful all the way.

luxury and don't be too picky, but there's everything you need and
it's a private room at a great rate. Quite uncomplicated, I could do
some short notice extension as I decided to stay one night longer,
and then even one more.

for 5 nights. It was a great experience, I can recommend this rental.
John is a great host, he is going out of his way to accommodate
everybody's requests. He is friendly and he is a great cook too! I am
planning to be back in New York at the end of April and I will stay

a great price.

Johns place is as described, a huge
and quiet loft that he built. Not luxury but its a good way to save
money if youre going to expend the whole day exploring the city.
Its close to the subway station wiht direct line to manhattan (A
and C line). John makes coffee every morning for the guests and he
cleans the bathrooms every morning as well.

Veronika
Great way to save money on a trip to
NYC. Bring your own blankets because it gets very cold at night and
there are none for you to use. The area is safe enough but it gets
very deserted at night. Coffee in the mornings was great. Don't
expect any privacy or luxury staying here but it is a cheap way to
see NYC. FYI, smoking is allowed indoors and there are two cats.
Average age of other guests is 22-25.

Another host nearby could not host me.
He sent me to John's place. As a young 18 year old french woman
traveling alone I am careful. The accommodations were incredible for
just $10. per day. $11. with the AirBnB fee. It is a medium size
room. Very bright. Sun drenched as the host John says. Though it has
4 twin beds on 2 wooden bunks and one twin it is not cluster phobic.
It is meant as a budget shared room to sleep in. The vanity was nice.
Storage that I locked with a padlock. The rest of the Loft is large.
Balcony's, gigantic rear deck and a giant private roof with nice
views including Manhattan. I had the room all by myself. But met
several interesting Europeans from Germany and Italy renting the
private rooms. The common area is large. Nice kitchen dining area.
Unusual. The large refrigerator is in the same room as the shower.
John is an artist. The shower room is large. The host was very
helpful. He showed me how to use the MTA Trip planner to efficiently
travel to my activities in Manhattan. John has to be the best Host on
AirBnB and possibly all of NYC ! Twice he made me a delicious meal !
3-4 Minute walk to Subway. A metro. 20 minutes 34 street Manhattan
off peak ! I am glad the other host cancelled. $10. nightly. safe,
clean convenient, food. #1 host and place to stay in NYC. Oh it is
$10. for thirty day stay. The price is more expensive for 3 days or a
week but still cheapest in NYC ! Thank you John. 5 stars. He deserves
10 stars !

in a good neighborhood just short walk from a supermarket and utica
subway station... and just 20 minutes far from Manhattan with public
transprtation!!! Sure i would be back there next time i'm going to
NYC! and if you are a good traveler who really wants to discover the
real life of the place you are visiting sure you'll enjoy this place.
Very safe, good wi fi connection, clean and easy! see you next time

This accomodation is by far the best
value for a short-stay room in New York that I have seen. The cost
for my own room per night actually worked out even cheaper than a
hostel where a person would share a full dormitory of 6-8 people.
This place was great value - and I had my own room. The host was very
helpful. My first experience of his helpfulness was when I noticed
that my computer cable had broken. When I asked him if he knew where
I could get a replacement in the city, he actually went out of his
way to fix the cable for me! He saved me a number of bucks doing
this, and also saved me the time it would have taken to locate the
replacement. Big thanks to him for that. And that was just the first
day. The host has coffee on the stove every morning. It is also
likely he will cook something for you a few times during your stay.
It could be a roast, or it could be a big breakfast sandwich that
will keep you going for a number of hours. The crowd that I came
across in the place was mostly young and vibrant and interesting. It
is a good place for you to meet up with like-minded adventurers in
the city of New York. The host has a large amount of very practical
local knowledge. He has a large willingness to share very useful
knowledge with you. This was invaluable for me because, as a
soon-to-be qualified attorney, I was in town to find out the
possibilities of locating a long-term apartment lease and a job in
the city. The host went out of his way to share his valuable
knowledge with me about these things. The host is worth listening to
carefully. The quality of the place was very satisfactory. If you are
a complainer or nit-picker, or have impossibly high standards, don't
waste anybody's time and get a 150 buck a night hotel instead.
However, if you want something with great value and have realistic
expectations of what great value is, then you will really benefit
from staying in a place like this. Even though I give a 4-star rating
(which is very good), I actually give the extra 5th star in the
rating when I factor in the price and all the extras. Again, have
realistic expectations for a place in this price range, and
appreciate good value when you see it, despite being a little rough
around the edges. Furthermore, as time goes on, the host continually
makes improvements to the place and has a genuine commitment to
creating accomodation that adds value to the people who stay there. I
expect the place will only become better and better in the future.

5 stars! I had a great stay with John
in his loft apartment. His description of the living space is very
accurate. My room was clean and spacious, the loft was quiet through
the night (had no disruptions from flatmates in other rooms), the
bathrooms were clean and John even cooked 2 meals for me during my
stay (quite the chef I might add)! For the price range and location,
this listing can't be beat!

John is a welcoming friendly host.
Staying at his place in a private room beats staying at a hostel
sharing with 3-11 other unknowns. Also he makes sure he only rents to
non-sketchy people, which can only be a good thing. It's close to
Manhattan, the neighbourhood doesn't look safe but is actually
really ok and I doubt you can get a better deal than this. Peace out!

John is a gracious and welcoming host.
The property is as described, and the bed is very comfortable. The
place (as stated) is rough-hewn, but clean, quiet., and comfortable.
The A train express is just two blocks away, so this is very
convenient to Manhattan.

We transferred to another room because
it was cheaper. But it's not that small - still a good size AND it's
private after all. John offered us some dinner one day which was
pretty darn good. He does keep things clean around here (but a lot of
it depends on other guests here too) so he's a good host.

John's Place is very close to the train
station and in a safe area. I never felt insecure during the whole
stay. The rooms are in a loft and have all the advantages of a loft:
the common room, that everybody can use, is big and there are several
very big patios which is great for summer. You are welcome to use the
big kitchen and because John is a great cook, you should accept his
weekly invitation for a meal. John also knows a lot about New York
and has a lot of material and information to share. He answered my
E-mails amazingly fast and helped us a lot to find the way from the
airport to his place. On the other side, you should be aware, that
the walls in the loft are very thin and you can hear everything.
During the night it sometimes became very cold in the rooms, because
the rooms are very high and the heat accumulated under the ceiling.
There is just one shared shower for all. Altogether it's a nice place
to stay. But if you want to stay in New York for several weeks, you
should first test this place for some days and then decide if this is

The place is really nice and clean and
super close to the subway. My room had a beautiful view and a comfy
bed. John can be a little intense, on the first night he was quite
annoyed with me for catching a cab as he said cab drivers were
'crooks' but after that he was very helpful and pleasant.
Even gave me some delicious roast he made and let me hang out past
check out time. All in all it was a good experience.

Really nice spacious room which I
shared with my cousin and we had ample space for all our stuff. The
location is pretty near to the station, about five minutes walk away.
John is a really helpful host and made sure we had a place to stay on
New Year's night when he found out that we didn't have anywhere to go
for that night. And honestly I don't think you'll find a better deal
for the price you pay, especially if you're travelling alone in NYC
:)

I couldn't agree more with Nacio's
exact review. Close distance from subway station and warm rooms are
good. However, if you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, I don't
recommend this place. He smokes inside the house and rooms for guests
have a big glassless hole facing kitchen where he usually smoke.
Considering the cheap price of room, you may bear some shortcomings..
but I don't think it's comfortable to live for a long time in this
house.

Hey travelers! I stayed at john's space
in crown heights, Brooklyn for 10 days & would recommend it to
any of you out there on a budget who don't need many frills. It feels
like a cross between a hostel & a friend's place - there were
long term & short term guests here - everyone was respectful &
quiet. Excellent value for money & steps away from 24 hour
transit anywhere in NYC. The shower needs improvement but it's a
great place to hang yer hat. Would/will stay here again. Thanks John,

I wouldn't choose Jonn's in matter of
the size of the room. But it was comfortable and the practical
facilities all right. Besides the room there is a ' shared space'
where it is possible to spend time/ do activities if the space of the
room isnt 'satisfying' which works fine. The bed was fine.
Transport to Manhattan is easy.

If you are considering a hostel, this
would be a much better choice. The rooms are private; there is a
fridge, basic cooking facilities and John makes coffee every morning.
John gives fair warning about the neighborhood and I certainly
wouldn't walk around late at night, but it is very near the train,
the grocery store and laundromat are walking distance and the
neighborhood folk are generally friendly. It is definitely worth the
price.

Nice room, close to subway station and
to everything, few minutes to Manhattan. Mattresses, sheetes and
pillows where new when we arrived. John is funny and very helpful, he
gave us a lot of advices.

Good place overall. Pros: own room with
lock and key, on A express line, cheap Cons: My clothes smelled like
smoke, cats kept me up 3 nights, the fridge is in the bathroom for
some reason. the area is a little ghetto but overall safe since very
close to the main road. John and everyone in the house is friendly
and keep the place clean, though i bought my own cleaning wipes and
cleaned the toilets few times. I expected that since the place has 9
rooms and just 2 toilets and 1 bathroom. john was very gracious and
offered dinner on more than 2 occasions. for $29 a night it was a
bargain.

It's a good place to stay for a few
weeks if you need an affordable homebase while you're exploring the
city The subway is just a short walk away, it takes about 20 minutes
to get to the west side of downtown Manhattan, which for New York is
very okay. John is a helpful host, often offering his guests food and
good advice or tips on where to go and how to get there. There is a
large common area with a kitchen that holds everything you need; the
bathrooms and shower are also shared by all. Rooms have loft beds,
drawers, chairs, tables, lamps - in short, everything you need. If
anything's missing, just ask; John is quite good at providing
anything extra (for example the extension cord and socket adapter I
needed to get comfortable in bed with my laptop). If you have any
more questions, just ask, I'll be happy to help you out.

I stayed at Johns place for just over a
week. The location of the place is great, only a short walk to the
train station and ~10 min to lower Manhattan. There was also on the
street parking easily available. John was a great host, provided me
information on how to get around and also recommended some places to
check out. Its great value for money, would stay here again if I'm in
NYC. Room was sun drenched and clean. He offered coffee every
morning. The complimentary BLT he made for me was delicious. If

Very helpful when we had a last minute
emergency, my daughter was in New York without internet and I was in
Scotland and I had to find her somewhere quickly. He replied
immediately and made up the room for her. She says it was great to
have a private room and room to open a case and hang up clothes. Easy
to come and go as you get your own key and it's close to everything
you need especially the subway. She says she felt safe in the house
and the neighbourhood, even as a solo female. Complimentary coffee
was also nice as was the BLT he made one day.
